The Village Fell, So the Serpent God Woke and Kept Me novel · Chapter 20 of 24
Chapter 20: Free
Saren stood on the southern bank of the Rill with the water running around his ankles.
He could not make himself take another step.
The road went away in front of him through low wet fields.
He had been bound for three hundred and twelve years.
He had not once, in all that time, wondered what lay at the end of a road.
The Marshal and what was left of his riders had gone in the night, leaving their wounded and their wagon ruts behind.
Nobody on the far bank was awake.
A bird sang in a hedge.
It was only a sparrow. Saren listened to it with his whole body.
When he turned around, Ellory stood on the near bank in the dawn light with his hair on end, barefoot, watching him.
"Is it real?" Ellory said.
"I do not know. Come and see."
He held out a hand.
Ellory splashed across the Rill with his trousers rolled to the knee and took it. His fingers were cold and sure.
They stood together on the south bank, in the world, and neither of them said anything for a long time.
"Where would you go?" Ellory said at last. "If you could go anywhere."
