Chapter 21: The Second Night
Ellory's gran's cottage stood at the end of the east lane, with its thatch half torn and its door hanging open.
Nobody had touched it.
Blossom had drifted in through the window and lay in white drifts across the table and the bed.
The air smelled of pear flower and old woodsmoke.
Ellory stood in the doorway with the ring on his finger.
"It's small," he said.
"It is perfect."
"The roof leaks."
"Then we shall fix the roof," Saren said.
He ducked under the lintel, which was a foot too low for him, and stood in the middle of the room with his head against the beams.
"In the morning."
"In the morning."
They looked at each other.
The moon came in through the broken thatch, and lay on the bed.
"I've been thinking," Ellory said.
"That is alarming."
"No fire unless I say."
Saren's eyes went dark.
"I remember that rule," he said, very softly.
"I have been wondering for a week what it would be like to hear you say it."
Ellory crossed the room.
He did not stop until he had both hands flat on the god's chest.
Then he reached up and put his mouth to Saren's ear.
