Chapter 24: The Serpent's Peace

They were married under Aldwyn's oak on the first morning of spring.

The village had rebuilt the feast hall roof over the winter.

It had mended the smithy, the mill and the wall, and it had carried every table out into the glade.

Nobody had been asked to.

Ellory stood under the branches in his gran's best coat, which a neighbour had let out at the shoulders.

He was trying not to be sick.

"It's only a wedding," Lowen said at his elbow. "People have them all the time."

"Not to a god," Ellory said.

"He's not that scary," Lowen said. "He asked me yesterday what a hat was for."

"He's very good with hats now."

"He's holding three."

It was true.

Saren stood at the far side of the glade in a coat of dark red wool.

He had a hat on his head and a hat in each hand.

His expression was one of grave concentration.

He saw Ellory looking.

He took off all the hats and handed them to the miller.

A murmur of laughter went around the glade, and then the fiddle began.

Gwenith stood between the roots of the oak with her pipe in her pocket for once.

She held a leather book, bound that winter, and the first page was already full of crooked writing.

"We'll have none of your speeches," she told the glade. "I wrote down what mattered. It's short."
