Chapter 18: Eleven Hunters and Two Healers

Paju in the morning was a field of dead grass and a wall of gray concrete.

The wall was three stories high.

In the middle of it was a round steel door the size of a bus.

Twelve ward plates held it shut, each one carved with a seal.

Eleven hunters stood in a line before it in full gear.

Behind them stood two healers, a driver, and a flatbed of supplies.

Seon-ho stood at the end of the line, in his mint smock under a borrowed armored vest, and held Tae-hwan's bare hand.

He did not care who saw.

Most of them were looking anyway.

"That's him," a hunter whispered, not quite quietly enough. "The deserter. That's the one."

"Doesn't he wear gloves?"

"They say he's cursed. Say the gate did something to his hands."

"Why's the healer holding on to him?"

"Because he's the healer," said Da-bin, loudly, from the other side.
