Maerielle returned the engraved cup to Darian before its wrapping reached the floor.
"You can keep your understanding," she told him.
Her cousin held the box with both hands.
"It's a family kindness."
"It has the wrong family engraved on it."
Tavrian's mouth moved before he looked away.
Maerielle was glad of the almost-laugh and furious about everything around it.
She didn't want her cousin making him the audience for her humiliation.
She wanted to speak to the duke without anyone deciding what their conversation proved.
"Will you walk with me?" she asked.
He considered her face and nodded.
Darian moved to follow.
Thessa gave him the damp napkins from the table.
"The kitchen can take those," she said.
He looked down at them as though employment had been thrust upon him.
Maerielle left before he could refuse the ordinary task.
She took Tavrian toward the small sitting room.
