Chapter 4: Three Terms

Dorian Stroud ducked under the cellar's low frame and dropped the broken bolt on the floor.

Behind him, the guard lay on his side in the corridor, breathing, with a red mark on his jaw.

"He'll wake with a headache," Dorian said. "Can you walk?"

"I can run."

"Then don't. Walk out beside me, as my guest."

"Am I?"

"You are the Wycliffe heir. Tonight you are whatever you choose to be."

He held out his arm.

I did not take it.

I walked out beside him, and I kept my hands to myself.

The corridor was empty, and so was the yard.

Roderick had sent the pack to bed, and put Verity Crane on the gate with six wolves.

She stood in the torchlight with her hand on her sword.

She looked at me, and at Dorian, and at the broken lock in his hand.

Then she stepped aside.

She did not say a word.

Stormreach's camp was a ring of tents on the east road, a quarter mile from the Greyhollow wall.

It smelled of woodsmoke and boiled coffee.

Dorian put me by the fire in his own tent, wrapped a wool blanket round my shoulders, and sat across from me on a camp stool.

A young Stormreach wolf brought two tin cups and went out again.

"Drink," Dorian said. "Then ask me whatever you like."

I held the hot cup.

"Why did you come to Greyhollow?"

"To sign a treaty. And to see if the Wycliffe ring was what I thought it was." He looked at his hands. "Your father's soldiers let my father's pack cross their lines alive, when I was nine. I have looked for his family for twenty-four years."

"They're all dead."

"Not all of them."

I drank.

"I need your help, Dorian."

"Tell me."

"Colm Radley has been stealing from the pack for a year. Greyhollow's grain order was rerouted to a warehouse on the east road. I heard him say it tonight."
