I did not get out of the truck.
"No," I said. "I'm going to say all of it, and then you can throw me out."
Jack kept both hands on the wheel and didn't look at me.
"Say it."
So I did.
"Carrie came up the stairs at ten past ten. No coat, no purse, shaking so hard she dropped her keys.
"She put the phone on the counter and showed me the ledger pages.
"I told her it had to be a mistake.
"Wyatt had paid for my mother's first month of dialysis the winter before, and he never told anyone.
"I thought he was the one good Ellsworth. I thought his mother was doing this behind his back.
Jack's jaw was tight, but he let me go on.
"Carrie begged me not to call him. She said she'd bring it to you instead, and I said that was a day away.
"I said Wyatt could fix it tonight."
