Chapter 20: Donors
"No," the deputy said. "Absolutely not."
It was noon on Monday, and the sixth-floor conference room had a map of the Ellsworth Grand ballroom taped across the whiteboard.
Jack stood at the head of the table with a marker in his hand.
Eleven agents sat around it, and the deputy sat at the foot with his jaw set.
"Walk me through why she's on the stage," the deputy said.
"She is a witness with a perjury exposure, standing in front of the man who wants her named as a thief."
"Because Wyatt invited her," Jack said. "He needs her up there. He thinks she'll be too frightened to speak."
"His tracker never left his lawyer's office or the Roland Park house," Jack went on. "He isn't running. He believes he has already won."
"And if she is?"
"Then we arrest him in the lobby, and the Governor's office says we ruined a charity night, and the judge and the commissioner walk."
He tapped the map.
"I want all four of them in one room: Wyatt, Margaret, the judge and the commissioner.
