Chapter 15: Twenty Minutes in the Back Seat

Mireille's POV

"Say what you came to say," I told my brother.

Tobias stood in the doorway of the boat shop and looked at the floor.

"I saw the video," he said. "Jasper's."

"And?"

"Lorna told me he was dangerous. She told me you'd run straight to him if you got out of that car."

"I did."

"I know." He swallowed. "I called her after I watched it. She said he was lying and you were unwell. Then she hung up on me."

Behind me, Jasper had gone completely still.

Tobias opened his hand.

The small brass key lay in his palm.

"This is the spare," he said. "It's been in my glove box since the morning of the wedding."

I stared at it.

"You threw the key off the bridge," I said.

"I threw the first one. I had the twin the whole time."

"The whole time."

"Yes."

"You could have opened my door at any minute that afternoon."

"Yes."

"You sat in the car behind mine, and you had it in your glove box while I was beating on the glass."

"Mar..."

"Don't call me that."

He flinched.

I held out my hand, and he put the key in it.

It weighed almost nothing.

"Where's your car?" I said.

"By the curb."

"Show me."

He led me out to a silver SUV parked under the streetlight.

Jasper followed, but he stopped at the garage door and let me go on alone.

"Get in the back," I said.

"What?"

"The back seat. Get in."

He looked at my face, and whatever he saw there, he opened the rear door and climbed in.

I shut it.

I switched the engine on with the spare key, and I turned the air as high as it would go.
