Chapter 15: The Reading

The Draycott board room had a long table and twelve chairs, and every chair was full.

I walked in beside Killian on Friday morning, in my one good blazer, with my children left behind with our neighbor and his two sons.

The family's lawyer sat at the head of the table with the will in a leather folder.

He was a tidy man with a soft voice.

I knew the voice before he spoke, because my mother had described it in my kitchen.

"Miss Gleeson," he said, with a smile. "We asked for the children."

"You asked for my children," I said. "I said no."

"That's regrettable."

"It's the answer."

"Sit down, Willa," Killian said quietly, and he pulled out a chair for me.

I sat.

A woman at the far end of the table looked me up and down, and I saw her decide that I was the jilted bride from the paper.

I let her.

"We'll begin," the lawyer said, and cleared his throat. "Before the will is read, I should note that Mr. Draycott left a letter to his son, and I understand Killian has circulated it."

"I've read it," Killian said. "So has Willa."

"The letter is the confused work of a dying man."

"It says you copied her signature."

The room went still.

"It says I..." The lawyer laughed. "That's a serious accusation to make in front of the board."

"Then answer it in front of the board," Killian said. "On the fourteenth of September, five years ago, you met me in the vestibule of St. Brendan's with a paper."

"I don't recall."

"You do."

"I met a great many people that day."

"You told me Willa Gleeson had taken two million dollars to leave me. Say it again, to her face."

The lawyer's smile stayed where it was.
