Chapter 11: The Boat
I woke at five on Wednesday with the lake flat and white outside the window and the fog sitting on it.
Casimir was already awake beside me, looking at the ceiling.
"You're thinking too hard," I said.
"I'm thinking you'll be sorry."
I turned my head.
He kept his eyes on the ceiling.
"When this wears off," he said. "When it stops being the Gathering and the dock and the pack watching."
"You'll look at the man in your bed and see the loud night you didn't plan."
I got out of bed and pulled a sweater over my head.
"Boathouse," I said. "Bring a blanket."
"Sigrid."
"Bring it."
The old rowboat hung on its davits in the boathouse, cedar planks, white paint worn grey, my grandfather's.
We lowered it into the water without a splash.
He rowed, because I let him, and I sat in the stern with my knees up and watched his arms work.
The fog took the shore in four strokes.
