Chapter 19: The North Shore
Casimir didn't move.
He stayed over me in the sauna with the steam on his shoulders and looked at me for a long moment.
"Say that again," he said.
"I want to be claimed," I said. "By you. Not tonight, I want to be rested for it."
"Not in a sauna with snow in my hair. I want to do it right."
"Rule one," he said, very softly.
"Rule one is mine, and I'll break it when I'm ready."
He bent his head and kissed me, slow and careful.
"Then I'll wait," he said. "I'm good at waiting."
"I know," I said. "You waited six months."
He laughed against my mouth.
We slept that night under three quilts with the plow still out on the county road.
In the morning, a pickup came down the Point with a blade on the front, throwing white arcs off to either side.
Odile climbed out of it in a parka and snow boots with a leather folder under her arm.
I let her in and gave her coffee, boiled in the pot, and she sat at the long table with her hands round the cup.
Casimir came in from the woodpile, stamping snow, and stopped when he saw her.
"Interim Alpha," he said.
"Don't start," she said.
She opened the folder and slid a paper across the wood.
