Chapter 3: The Boxes

The council's pick for Luna brings Sigrid's things and a plain fact about a dawn session, then Sigrid takes Casimir to bed; Leighton strips him of his post by text.

Odile Prentiss stood on my porch at dawn with three cardboard boxes at her feet and her braid coming loose.

She had not slept either.

"Those are your things from the pack house," she said. "Your jacket, your tools, the tide tables from your locker."

"Somebody had to bring them, and I thought it should be me."

I looked at her for a long moment.

Behind me, Casimir had gotten up off the couch and stood with the blanket over his shoulder, bare-chested.

Her eyes went to him and away again.

"Beta," she said.

"Odile," he said.

"Come in," I said, because it was cold and she had carried the boxes herself.

She came as far as the kitchen and stopped.

She stood a careful distance from the counter, and I didn't help her out by saying why.

"I'm not here to be forgiven," she said.

"I'm here because you said thank you last night, and I haven't been able to sleep since."

"You didn't do anything to me," I said.

"I did. I said yes."

She turned the council pin on her collar between two fingers.

"The council met at six on Tuesday morning," she said.

"He called it himself, and the clerk had to be woken up to take the minutes."

"By seven I'd been told in the hallway, with my coat still on."

"Told what?" I said.

"That I was Luna-elect," she said.

"Nobody asked me," she said. "I thought it was the pack's decision."

She shook her head.

"I have sat on that council for seven years and never seen it decide anything in an hour."

Casimir had gone still beside the stove.

"I'm sorry," Odile said. "I didn't want to be anyone's second pick."

"You weren't second," I said.

"I wrote Leighton a letter a week ago Saturday and refused him myself."

"He rejected me because I'd already left."

Odile's hand stopped on her pin.

Her face went through three things at once, and none of them was surprise.

"A week ago Saturday," she said.

"Registered. It came back signed Monday."

She nodded slowly, once, and her mouth closed on whatever she had been about to say.

"I'll go," she said. "The boxes are on the table."

She went out and drove away without looking back at the house.

Casimir watched the car down the lane.

"She knows something," he said.

"She knows something she doesn't like," I said.

"I'm not going to chase it before breakfast."

"You are going to have breakfast," he said.

He made coffee in my grandmother's pot, boiled and black, and fried four eggs in butter.

He stood at my stove in his jeans with the sun coming up gold on the lake.

I watched his back for as long as I could stand it.

The muscle along his spine moved when he turned the eggs.

There was an old scar low on his left side.

When the plates were empty, I put mine in the sink and took his from his hand.

"Term three," I said.

"You ask before you touch."

He looked at me.

"May I take you to bed, Sigrid?" he said.

"Yes."

"Now?"

"Now," I said, and he picked me up.

In my room, the morning sun lay across the quilt.

I pushed him down on the bed, because I wanted him there.

I stripped off my shirt and pants in front of him with the light on my skin.

He watched with both hands open on the blanket, not moving.

"You can touch," I said.

"Thank God," he said, and ran both hands up my thighs.

I unbuttoned his jeans and pulled them off, and his cock sprang free, thick and flushed and heavy in my hand.

He sucked in a breath when I closed my fist around it.

"Look at you," I said. "You're so hard."

"For you," he said. "Only for you. Since April."

I stroked him slowly, root to tip, and watched the muscles in his stomach jump.

His head went back on the pillow.

"Don't come yet," I said.

"I won't."

"Good."

I climbed over him and knelt astride his hips, slick already, my knees on either side of his ribs.

I held him upright and lowered myself onto him an inch at a time.

He was big.

It stretched me, deep and thick, and I stopped halfway with my breath held and my hands flat on his chest.

"Sigrid," he said, strained. "Are you all right?"

"Yes. Stay still," I said.

"Staying still," he said.

"Let me do it."

I took the rest of him in one long slide, until I sat flush on his hips.

I was full and shaking, and my body clenched around his.

He made a low sound that came from his chest.

His hands gripped my hips and held on.

"Good," I said. "That's good. You're doing so well."

"I'd do anything you said," he said.

"I know."

I rocked slowly at first, up and down the whole length of him.

Every stroke hit the place inside me that made my toes curl.

He watched my face the entire time.

"Touch me," I said. "My clit."

His thumb found it and circled, light and exact, and I moaned and sped up.

The bed knocked against the wall.

I leaned forward with my braid falling over my shoulder and my hands on either side of his head and rode him harder.

"Tell me how it feels," I said.

"Like I've wanted it for years."

"More."

"Hot," he said, his voice cracking. "Tight. You squeeze me when I touch you there. I'm not going to last."

"You will," I said, "until I say."

His jaw clenched.

His thumb kept circling, steady and exact, and the heat built low in my belly and wound tighter.

"Sigrid," he said. "Please."

"Not yet. Hold on," I said.

"Holding," he said.

"Good boy."

Something went through him at that, a shudder from his chest to his thighs, and his cock jumped inside me.

That was what tipped me.

I came with a hard cry and my head thrown back.

I clenched around him in waves, and he groaned beneath me and held on through every one.

"Now," I said, shaking. "Now, Casimir."

He came with a shout, thrusting up into me once and then again.

His hands crushed my hips, and I felt every pulse of him fill me.

I collapsed on his chest.

His arms came around me at once and his mouth found my hair.

"That was the best thing that ever happened to me," he said into it, quietly.

"It's eleven in the morning," I said.

"Then it's the best way I've ever started a day."

I laughed against his chest, and he laughed too, and for a minute neither of us moved.

His phone buzzed on the nightstand.

He reached for it without letting go of me, read the screen, and went still under my cheek.

"What?" I said.

He turned the screen so I could see it.

The message came from the Alpha.

The north-shore post was revoked, effective at noon, and the Beta's silver was to be returned to the Lodge clerk by then.

Casimir read it twice, and then he began to laugh.

"I've been fired by text," he said.
