Signe's POV
I woke on Monday morning with a man's arm across my ribs and sun on my mother's quilt.
For a moment I did not know where I was.
Then I heard the clock above the kitchen stove ticking through the floor, and I knew.
Rhys slept on his stomach with his face turned toward me and his hair standing up in every direction.
There was a crease on his cheek from the pillow.
One hand lay open on the quilt between us, palm up.
I put my finger into it, and his hand closed on it without his waking.
I had thought I would feel different, being married.
I felt like Signe Aldahl, who weighs grain, and I felt like a woman in her mother's bed, and I could not find the seam between them.
"You're thinking," Rhys said into the pillow.
"I'm weighing," I said.
He turned his head and opened one gray eye.
"It is Monday," he said.
"It's six," I said.
"You have the scale house, and I have a job in the cellar at eight."
He groaned and rolled onto his back.
"I had a secretary," he said to the ceiling.
"I had a car with a heater."
"You have a wife with a truck," I said.
"The heater works."
"On the passenger side, when you kick the dash," said Rhys.
I kicked him instead.
He caught my ankle and pulled, and I came down laughing across his chest.
Neither of us was in a hurry for twenty minutes.
The scale house sits at the end of the Touchet River road, where the gravel turns to blacktop at the grain elevator.
