Chapter 15: The Name Aloud

Nico's POV

The house was very quiet on the second morning.

I had thought that it would be loud.

I had thought that without her it would fill up with the old noise.

I had expected the stairs and the pipes and the clock in the hall my father wound every Sunday.

It was quiet instead.

What I heard in the quiet was a six-year-old coming down the stairs one step at a time with a seahorse.

"Papa," Teo said.

He stood in the kitchen door in his pajama bottoms.

"Where's Luca?"

"At his grandmother's in Port Arthur," I said.

"Is he coming back?"

"I hope so."

"You said hope," Teo said.

"You said that about Mama."

I put down the coffee.

It was the longest speech he had made in a week.

He had been talking a little since the Saturday of the pastina, a sentence here, a question there.

I had not known how closely he was listening.

"Come here," I said.

He came.

I lifted him onto the counter, where my mother would have forbidden it, and held him by both elbows.

"I'm going to tell you the truth," I said.

"Dr. Ines said I should.

"She said you can carry more than I think."

"Okay," said Teo.

"Ines is angry at me," I said.

"Not because I did something to her.

"Because of something my family did a long time ago, and I should have seen it and didn't.

"I'm going to fix it, and I don't know yet if it will bring her back."
