Chapter 20: The Man Who Carried the Keys
The driver lived on Mill Road, in a yellow house with a ramp on the porch.
He was seventy-three, and he had driven Winston's father for thirty-one years.
He opened the door himself, leaning on a walker with a green tank of oxygen hung on the frame.
He looked at Winston, and then he looked at me.
"I wondered when one of you would come," he said.
His wife made coffee we did not drink.
We sat in a small front room full of framed photographs of the Garrick children in the back of a long black car.
Winston did not sit at first.
"I've come about the Tuesday before the crash," he said. "My wife's car."
"Sit down, son. I'm too old to look up at you."
Winston sat on the edge of the couch with his hands between his knees.
"I took it to the mechanic?" the driver said. "No. I didn't. Mrs. Garrick had me bring it to her own garage, behind the big house."
"Why?"
"She said the mechanic would come to her. She said she'd arranged a favor for Linnea's anniversary."
He nodded toward me, and his old eyes were wet.
"The man came at four. He changed the oil and looked at the tires. He was there maybe forty minutes."
"He didn't touch the brakes?" Winston asked.
"No, sir. I stood beside him. He wiped his hands and said the car was fine."
"Then what?"
The driver breathed in and out through the tube.
"Then Mrs. Garrick sent me home," he said. "She said, 'Go and see your grandchildren, you've earned it.' I had never in thirty years been sent home at five."
