Chapter 17: Bree Cracks

I took her into the bakery kitchen and sat her on a flour stool by the warm oven.

Sam locked the alley door and stood in front of it with his arms folded.

I put the oven on and started the first batch of dough, because my hands needed a job.

Bree watched me work.

"You were nice to me at the party," she said. "You brought the cake yourself, and you said congratulations."

"I didn't know who you were."

"I did. I knew exactly who you were." Her voice shook. "Kyle showed me your picture in March."

I kept kneading.

"I knew he was married," she said. "He told me the marriage was over and you'd moved out. I knew the clinic said he couldn't have children. That's why it was Preston."

"You chose that."

"Preston chose it. Kyle asked him, and he said yes."

"And you said yes."

"I was in love with him." She wiped her face with the cuff of her cardigan. "He told me we'd be a family. Once the trust was signed and the divorce was done, he'd leave the firm's money alone and marry me, and Kyle would be an uncle on paper."

"Did you believe that?"

"I wanted to."

She looked up at Sam, and then at me.

"Last night, after the signing fell through, he drove me home. He sat in the car outside my building and made a phone call and left it on the speaker. I don't think he meant me to hear."

"To who?" Sam said.

"To Kyle. Preston said Kyle was a signature, and a signature could be replaced."

She took a breath.

"He said the trust would name him as trustee. He'd run the shares for the baby until it was eighteen, and I'd get a monthly check and an apartment on the other side of the river."
