Chapter 24: The Wedding Cake
I baked my own wedding cake on a Friday in May, in my grandmother's pans, at four in the morning.
Sam came into the kitchen at five with two coffees and stood in the doorway, and I didn't turn around.
"You're not supposed to see it," I said.
"I'm not looking at the cake."
"What are you looking at?"
"Your flour."
I had it on my sleeves, my forearms and one cheek.
He put the coffee down and kissed the cheek.
"Go home," I said. "Number one is not allowed in the bakery on the morning."
"Number one is the groom."
"Number one is going to ruin my icing."
He went, grinning, and I heard the truck start in the alley.
By four that afternoon the backyard on Alder Street was full of folding chairs and my regulars, and the neighbors who had stood on the lawn in October stood at the back.
I had asked them to come.
I wore my grandmother's grey dress, taken in at the waist, and nothing borrowed or blue.
My assistant stood beside me as the only attendant I wanted, holding a bouquet of herbs from the bakery window box.
Sam waited under the maple in a plain dark suit with his hands clasped.
He looked at me coming across the grass, and he stopped trying to keep his face still.
Bree sat in the front row.
She had her son in the crook of her arm, three months old and asleep, with a fist against his mouth.
