Chapter 32: The Wife
I typed a single word with Holden's arm still heavy across my waist:
"Me."
The phone rang an instant later.
"You can't do your own wedding flowers," Mei shouted. "That's like a surgeon taking out her own appendix!"
"You'll help."
"I'll help," she said, instantly. "Obviously I'll help. I'm also officiating. I got ordained online last night. It cost nineteen dollars."
"Mei."
At six in the morning on Saturday the twelfth of September, Mei and I unloaded forty buckets inside my father's gate.
The glass pavilion was gone.
Where my father's office had stood, there was a square of new grass, and long wooden tables under strings of lights, and a borrowed piano.
I did the tables in sweet peas, late roses and rust-coloured dahlias, in old jars, the way my mother filled our kitchen.
The flower vendor had brought the sweet peas himself at five.
"Wedding present," he said. "Your father owed me six dollars. Now we're even."
At the foot of the gate, the three rose canes from Margaret's wall had climbed halfway up the left post.
One of them had a single bud on it, pale pink, tight as a fist.
