Chapter 11: The Worksheet
"The transfer of the Wentworth baby," Andrew repeated into the phone, slowly, so I could hear every word.
The voice on the other end got louder.
Andrew listened for a while with his eyes closed.
Then he opened them.
"There's no Wentworth baby here," he said. "There's a Fairweather baby. She's nine hours old. Her mother is holding her. If anyone from your building comes through my door, I'll call the police and then I'll call the newspaper, and I'll let them fight over who gets there first."
He hung up.
He stood in the dark hallway for a second with his hand still on the phone.
Then he came back in and sat down in the chair.
"You just hung up on your old boss," I said.
"I've wanted to do that for three years."
"How did it feel?"
He thought about it.
"Like a very good scone."
"You can't make scones."
"Like the idea of a very good scone."
He checked the locks again before he sat down. I pretended not to notice.
On Sunday morning, before the sun was all the way up, we filed her.
I sat propped on pillows with the baby asleep on my chest.
Andrew sat on the end of the bed with his laptop open to the state system, logged in as the attending physician.
I'd walked a hundred doctors through that screen over the phone.
I'd never had one sit on my bed while I did it.
"Next," I said.
"Plurality."
"Single. One baby. Thank God."
He typed it.
"Method of delivery."
"Vaginal, spontaneous, very rude."
"I'm putting vaginal, spontaneous."
He read every field back to me twice before he moved on.
At the end, the screen asked if all information was true and correct to the best of the attendant's knowledge.
He looked at me.
I nodded.
