The detective didn't come forward.
She stopped beside Table 41 and folded her arms.
The officers stayed at the doors.
Marshall's mother looked down the room at me, standing in orange at the back of her ballroom.
"Ada," she said into the microphone, warmly. "How lovely. Do sit down. We'll find you a better table after the speeches."
I walked up the center of the room, past six hundred people in black tie.
I stopped at the foot of the stage, below her podium.
"You said a family protects its own," I said. "Whatever it costs."
"I did."
"I'd like to show them what it cost."
The board woman in navy velvet sat at the slideshow laptop beside the stage.
She pressed one key.
The smiling children vanished from the screen.
The nanny's face came up instead, ten feet tall.
She'd recorded it at my lawyer's kitchen table three weeks before.
She pushed her sleeves up to the elbow, and the whole room saw her arms.
