Chapter 29: Trial

"Insanity," I said.

"It's a strategy," the detective said. "Not a diagnosis."

"She'll have two doctors from New York who've met her for six hours. We'll have everyone who ever watched her lie."

"Will it work?"

"Not if the jury's awake."

The trial started on the second Monday in June, in the courthouse in Stamford.

Marshall's mother wasn't there.

She'd pleaded guilty in May, to all three charges, in a navy suit with her lawyer reading her words for her.

Joy came every single morning with her knitting, and the bailiff gave up asking her to put the needles away.

Fallon sat at the defense table in cream.

Every day, a different cream sweater.
