Chapter 19: Under the Crown's Roof
The heir's chamber in Stenhavn Palace had a bed the size of a small boat.
Hakon had not slept in it for two years.
He shut the door and locked it, and turned the key twice.
Joren stood in the middle of the carpet in his shirtsleeves.
He had raw red rings on both wrists and a bruise gone yellow on his ribs.
He looked at the room, the big bed, the tall windows, the fire the servants had lit.
"I have not been in here since that night," he said.
"I know," Hakon said.
"Nine years in this palace. I never once came past the door, except that night."
"Come past it now," Hakon said.
Joren crossed the carpet and stopped in front of him.
He put one hand against the side of Hakon's neck, over the bite, and the mark under his skin flared warm at the touch.
Hakon shut his eyes.
"It hurts," he said.
"I know," Joren said.
"Good. Don't heal it."
"Wolves don't scar much, Hakon," Joren said.
"This one will."
Joren laughed, very softly.
It was the first time Hakon had heard it since the Moot Hall.
He opened his eyes and looked at that scarred, tired, beautiful face, and had to swallow hard before he could speak.
