Chapter 17: Ask Me Again

Ronan's POV

I lay across her doorway with my chin on the floorboards and listened to her breathe.

I had been there since midnight.

She had said kneel, and I had knelt, and nothing in me had come back up since.

It was not pain.

It was worse than pain, because every part of me liked it.

"Ronan?" Mara said from the bed.

I lifted my head.

"You can go," she said, sitting up with the blanket in her fists. "You're allowed to go. I'm telling you. Go sleep somewhere."

I stood up.

I meant to leave, and my legs took me one step into the room instead.

She saw it.

"You can't," she said, quietly.

I changed, because I couldn't say it as a wolf.

I stood on the cold boards in the dark with my hands open and nothing on.

"I don't know," I said. "I don't know if I can't, or if I won't. I can't feel where it stops."

"Where what stops?"

"You. The blood. Me." My voice was rough. "Every time I want you, I think, is that mine? Or did you put it there when you said kneel?"

She looked at me for a long time.

"Come here," she said.

"That's an order."

"Yes. And I'm going to take it back." She held out her hand. "Come here if you want to. If you don't, stay where you are, and I'll never say a word about it."

I didn't move.

For the first time since the road, I did not move.

I waited for the pull, and it did not come.

There was only the room, and her hand, and the plain thing I felt under all of it.

I walked across the floor and took her hand, and it was mine.

"That's me," I said. "That was me."

"I know," Mara said. "I watched you decide."

She pulled me down onto the bed by that hand.

She put her palm on my chest and her mouth on mine.

I hadn't kissed her since the study.

I'd forgotten how she kissed, slow at the start and then all at once.
