Chapter 18: Not a Prize

Bram's POV

I had Joss against the doorframe by his collar before I knew I'd moved.

"Say it again," I said.

"Bram," Cora said behind me. "Let him talk."

I let go.

Joss straightened his jacket and did not look offended, which told me how bad the news was.

"Garrick's up," he said. "On his feet. Imogen got a tonic into him from somewhere, and it gives him an hour of strength at a time. Silver in it. It's not his wolf, but it'll hold him in a fight."

"What's the challenge?" Cora said.

"Under the old law, an Alpha can call a duel against a rival who took his mate and his land. He says you were stolen, and Blackwater stole the Wexley blood." Joss rubbed the back of his neck. "Noon, at the Moon Stone. To the death. The winner takes you, and both packs."

"He can't take her," I said. "She's not a thing."

"The law says she is."

"Then I'll change the law with my hands."

I felt it rise in me, the thing I'd kept leashed since I was eleven years old.

I had sat across a table from men who wanted my seat and never raised my voice.

Now there was a roaring in my ears.

The gold was coming up in my eyes.

I knew exactly how Garrick's neck would feel under my fingers.

I would kill him.

He had held her wrist for three years, and hollowed her out, and sent a note about a burned child.

I would be glad of it.

"Bram."

Cora put her hand on my jaw.

It was the first time she had touched me since the bed, and she did it in front of Joss, with the door open, where anyone could have seen.
