Chapter 6: What the Dais Held

The Ashfall pack hall had been my home for three years, and I walked into it like a guest.

The long room was full. Every bench was taken, and people stood three deep along the walls.

Their eyes slid over me and away.

I wore the green dress and Bram's coat, and I had not asked for his arm.

He walked a pace behind me anyway, close enough that I could feel him there.

At the far end, on the dais, Garrick sat in the Alpha's chair.

Imogen sat in mine.

My mother-in-law's seat, I used to call it. The Luna's chair, carved with the Ashfall pine.

She wore a pale dress, and around her neck, on a thin chain, hung a small gold ring.

I knew that ring.

My mother had worn it every day of my childhood.

"Luna Wexley," Garrick said. He did not stand. "You came."

"You summoned me."

"I summoned a pack member to answer for her conduct."

"I'm Blackwater's Luna. The Stone sealed it."

"The Stone sealed a contract," Garrick said, loud enough for the benches. "It did not release you from Ashfall. Three years of vows doesn't vanish because you walked out in your underwear."

A few people muttered.

I felt my face heat, and I let it, and I kept my voice level.

"Say what you called me here to say."

He rose then, and smoothed his jacket, and turned to the pack.

"Ashfall," he said. "You know what happened at Sunset Forest. My wife, who was never able to bond with a wolf of her own, suffered a breakdown on the night of my brother's death anniversary."

I stared at him.

"She said things. She removed her ring. She was out of her mind with grief."

"I was not."

"I have been patient. I have asked her to come home. She has chosen a rival Alpha's bed instead."
