Chapter 14: The Widow's Kitchen

The widow lived in a narrow brick house on West Fifty-Third Street, with the lot on one side and Porter's future tower across the street.

I had eaten a sandwich in the car, as ordered.

She opened the door herself and looked me up and down.

"You wore the gray suit."

"It's the one I bought myself."

"Good. Come in."

Her kitchen was small and yellow, with a table for two and a shelf of cookbooks gone soft at the corners.

On the table sat a shoebox with a rubber band around it.

"Sit," she said.

I sat.

She took off the rubber band and tipped the box over.

Nine letters slid out, each one on cream paper with the Aspinwall Capital letterhead.

Every one of them was in my handwriting.

I had written them at my desk after midnight, over three years, and Porter had signed them without reading past the first line.

"I kept them all," she said. "My husband would have liked the one about the awning."

"I remember it."

"You wrote that you hoped I'd never sell the corner to anyone who wouldn't stand on it first and look up."

"I meant that."

"I know you did. That's why I answered."

She poured tea into two cups that didn't match.

"Now I'm going to ask you what I asked nobody else," she said. "Why did you write them for him?"

I could have said it was my job.

I said the other thing.

"Because I thought I was building something with him. I wasn't. He was just letting me hold the pen."

The widow nodded slowly.

"I sat in that boardroom on Monday and watched a grown man sell a girl for a building in a text message. Then I watched the girl stand up and tell a room full of men about it."

She tapped the table.
