Chapter 12: Until Saturday

I had my jeans on before the second knock.

Caleb pulled his shirt over his head, picked up my jacket and handed it to me without a word.

"Stay here," he said.

"No."

"Carys."

"It's your shop and my ex's truck." I pushed my arms into the sleeves. "I'm coming out."

Caleb nearly laughed.

He hauled the roll-up door up three feet and ducked under it.

I followed him out into the cold gravel lot.

Jared stood by his truck with the door open and his phone in his hand.

He had shaved, and he had on a clean shirt, and his eyes were angry.

When he saw me come out from under the door, he stopped.

"Oh," he said.

Nobody said anything.

I buttoned my jacket slowly, so he could watch.

"How did you know I was here?"

"Joss told me."

"Joss."

"She texted an hour ago." He held out the phone. "She said, Check Caleb's shop. That's where Carys will be."

I took it.

The message was there on his screen, with her heart emoji at the end.

I felt a chill that had nothing to do with the night.

"How did she know?" I asked.

"I don't know."

"I didn't tell anyone."

"She said she'd been watching Caleb. She said he's been acting weird since the party." Jared looked at him. "She was right, wasn't she?"

Caleb stepped between us.

"Go home, Jared."

"I don't have a home."

"Then go to a hotel."

"What is this?" Jared's voice rose. "Are you sleeping with my girlfriend?"

"I'm not your girlfriend," I said.

"Ex-girlfriend."

"Not that either. You moved out. You moved in with Joss. You are nothing to me."
