Chapter 11: The Rain
Lena's POV
I found him in the guest cabin an hour before dawn, sitting on the edge of the bed with his shirt in his hands.
Four long cuts ran down his ribs.
They were still bleeding.
"Sit still," I said.
"You shouldn't be here."
"Timothy's wolves wouldn't dare come through that door tonight. The council's guest-right covers this cabin, and Leon stood in front of them in the snow."
He blinked.
"He did?"
"I saw it from the orchard." I knelt and opened Pat's bandage basket. "I don't understand him either."
The rain started while I worked.
It came on the tin roof gently and then hard, and the stove ticked, and the lamp threw our shadows on the wall.
I cleaned the cuts with warm water and he sat very still and let me.
His skin was hot.
Every time my fingers crossed the ridge of the old bite on his shoulder, he stopped breathing.
"You said you wouldn't touch me until you knew all of it," he said, low.
"I know all of it."
"Lena."
I tied off the bandage. "You walked up to the wire in the snow and let me shout at you. That was the last thing I needed to see."
"That's not all of it."
"What else is there?"
He turned his head.
His face was very close.
"That I want you," Crispin said. "That I've wanted you for four years, without a name to put to it. If I take you to bed tonight it won't be because the pull dragged me. I want you to know that before anything happens."
"I know the difference."
"Do you?"
"I'm going to show you."
I put my hand flat on his chest and pushed.
