Chapter 12: What the Cottage Cost
Gemma's POV
On the first Sunday of September, I carried my usual white envelope up the hill.
It held three hundred dollars.
I had come to tell Aldo I was not marrying anyone he picked.
My hands had packed the envelope that morning on their own, out of five years of habit.
Marco met me in the hall outside the study.
He straightened my collar, and his thumb rested on my pulse.
"Whatever he says," Marco said, very low, "remember who you walked in with."
"Marco, what is he going to say?"
"I'm sorry," he said again. "We were going to tell you today."
Behind him on the terrace, through the glass, the other three stood in a line with their hands at their sides.
Nico held a leather bag against his chest with both arms.
I knocked once and went in.
