Marco's POV
My father set the table for forty and left one chair empty at the Chicago partner's elbow.
It was her chair.
I saw it the moment we walked in, and so did she.
Gemma stopped beside it with the green ledger held against her chest.
She did not sit.
Behind her, my brothers fanned out in a line, and I took the place at her right hand.
The dining room fell silent in sections, from the head of the table to the door.
"Gemma," my father said, rising with his glass. "Cara. And my sons. You've come to your senses."
"Hello, Aldo," she said.
He smiled at the table.
"Our friends from Chicago have flown a long way to see this family settled. Sit, all of you, and we'll give thanks."
"I'd like to give thanks first," Gemma said.
Her voice was perfectly steady.
I had heard it in a hundred rooms, and never so clear.
"I owe a debt," she said. "Seven years of it. I've come to read the account."
My father's smile stayed where it was.
His ring tapped the glass once, a small cold tick.
"Gemma, this isn't the time-"
"It's exactly the time. You told me so yourself. You said we would settle it at table."
