Chapter 21: Father
I didn't go to the kitchen.
I went straight through it and out into the yard and threw up behind the woodpile.
Roan found me there.
"He knew you," he said.
"Yes."
"Will he tell Varrick?"
"I don't know." I wiped my mouth. "I don't know him anymore."
The summons came an hour later.
A royal footman in the Aldermoor white climbed all the way up the women's tower and knocked on our door.
"His Majesty wishes to see the girl who spilled the wine," he said. "He wants her to know he isn't angry."
Maudie looked at me from her bed with her mouth open.
"Tell him I'm coming," I said.
The King had the guest rooms at the top of the west tower.
The footman showed me in and left.
My father sat by the fire in a big chair with a rug over his knees, though the room was hot.
He looked up when the door shut.
For a long moment neither of us said a thing.
