Chapter 20: The Lake House
The lake house was a grey cedar cabin on the north shore of Buckeye Lake, with a wraparound porch and a dock that ran forty feet into the water.
Wade's father had built it.
Colette had called it a shack and never once stayed the night.
We arrived on Wednesday afternoon with groceries and one suitcase each.
My mother had moved out of the Dublin house on Tuesday.
She'd taken her clothes, her jewelry, and a brand-new apartment in a downtown tower.
She had left her house key on the kitchen counter.
Nobody had asked her to go.
She just could not stand the empty chairs.
Wade set the bags on the porch and looked out at the water.
It was late October, and the leaves had turned, and the lake lay flat and gold under a low sun.
"My dad used to say you could see forever from this dock," he said.
"Can you?"
"I never checked."
"Let's check," I said.
We walked down.
The planks were warm under my bare feet.
