Chapter 21: Accountability
"Inside," I said. "Both of you."
I put my dress back on, because the wind had turned cold.
I walked up the dock without looking back.
I heard their boots on the planks behind me, and I did not slow down.
In the cabin kitchen I turned on one light.
Julian stood by the door with his hands at his sides.
"I wasn't asking for a decision," he said.
"I know."
"I only wanted you to know I'd go if you told me to."
"Sit down."
He sat at the pine table.
Wade leaned against the counter with his arms folded, watching, and said nothing.
Julian reached into his jacket and set an envelope on the table.
It was thick and white.
"What's that?" I asked.
"Three things," he said. "The first is a written statement, signed and notarized, that I recorded you both without your knowledge at Colette Dorsey's request and for her payment. You can give it to any court, any lawyer, any newspaper."
"Okay."
"The second is a cashier's check for twenty thousand dollars. It's what she paid me. I'd like it to go to you."
