Chapter 22: Staying
I propped myself on one elbow and looked at Julian in the dark.
"Stay," I said.
He turned his head on the pillow.
"Not tonight," I said. "Not this month. Stay."
"Mallory."
"I'm not asking you to be fixed or forgiven or anything else," I said. "I'm asking you to be here when I wake up. Wade's here. I'm here. Stay."
His throat worked.
For a moment I thought he would argue.
"I'm not a good man," he said.
"No."
"I might not become one."
"Then be a man who stays anyway."
He closed his eyes.
A tear slid down the side of his face into his hairline.
"Yes," he said, very quietly. "Yes. I'll stay."
Wade shifted on his other side.
He propped his head on his hand and looked at Julian for a long, quiet minute.
