Chapter 24: The Last Prescription
Julian was the first one awake.
I knew because the bed was empty on his side.
The lake light was pouring pale through the curtains, and I could hear him moving in the kitchen.
I found him on the porch in a borrowed flannel shirt.
He had a mug of coffee in one hand and, in the other, a small blue pad of paper.
It was the old prescription pad from his desk.
"I found it in the box," he said. "I thought you might want it."
I took it.
The top sheet was blank, with a faint grey line across the middle.
"I used to give orders on this," he said. "I don't think I should keep it."
"Then I'll keep it."
He smiled.
He looked younger in the morning light, with his glasses off and his hair rumpled and the bruise on his cheek long gone.
"Where's Wade?" I asked.
"Down on the dock. He said he wanted to see forever again."
I walked down alone, barefoot on the cold planks, with the pad in my hand.
Wade sat on the end of the dock with his legs hanging over the water and a blanket over his shoulders.
He heard me and turned, and his whole face went warm.
