Chapter 8: Backseat
I told Wade on Tuesday, at noon, at the job site.
He was walking a half-framed house in Hilliard with a clipboard and a hard hat.
I found him in the empty garage bay with sawdust on his forearms.
"I have to tell you something," I said.
He looked at my face and set the clipboard down.
"Thorsby," he said.
"How did you know?"
"You came home Monday night at midnight with your hair wet." His jaw worked. "Tell me."
I told him.
The text, the address, the study, the desk.
I told him the words I'd said and the words Julian had said back.
I did not leave anything out, and I watched his hands close, open, and close again.
When I was done, the whole garage was quiet except for a nail gun popping somewhere up the street.
"He called you in alone," Wade said.
"Yes."
"He took a picture of your face."
"Yes."
"And you went."
"Yes," I said. "I wanted to."
He stared at me.
I expected him to shout.
