Chapter 19: Ward's Fall

"Why?" I said.

My hands were still pressed to the stone, and I did not take them off.

Ward stood over me with the blade raised and the torchlight running down it.

"Why did you cut her brake line?" I said. "She never hurt you."

"Because she would have ended us."

He said it almost gently.

"A Warden blesses the alpha, and the alpha answers to the Warden."

His eyes did not leave my face.

"The council would have been a row of old men with nothing to do. Your mother sat in my study and told me so. She was going to take the confirmation away from us and give it back to the pack."

"So you killed her."

"I saved the council," Ward said. "I raised my daughter on that seat. I kept this pack in order for eighteen years."

His lip curled.

"And you would have stayed in the dark forever, if you'd stayed the girl who did the flowers."

"Keep going, Elder," said Rodrick's voice.

Ward went rigid.

My brother was standing at the edge of the stones with his phone held high, and he did not look funny.

"You're live," Rodrick said.

"The Gathering feed, same as Founders' Night. Four hundred phones, three packs, and your own mouth."

He turned the screen toward Ward.

"You've been on since Linnet asked about the brake line, and you answered her."

Every wolf in the meadow had lifted its head.

I saw the heavy elder standing among them with his arms crossed.

The thin elder was beside him with her hand over her mouth.

Ward's face went through three colors.

Then he swung the blade down at me.

It never landed.

Brynn Standish came out of the dark and hit her father's arm with both hands.
