Chapter 15: The Four Notes
Aldric's POV
She came to the fence at sundown, with her brother beside her, exactly as she had said she would.
I had spent the afternoon in my tent with a map of Ironwood's land and no thought in my head fit for company.
The general stood behind me, and sixty of my best wolves stood behind her, and not one of them spoke.
"Papa," Wynn said through the chain link, and then caught herself and went red to the ears.
"It's all right," I said.
It was the finest word anyone had given me in sixteen years, and I kept my face as still as I could.
She pushed an envelope through the gap in the wire.
"My father found me at this fence," she said. "He wrote it all down. Look at what was in the snow beside me."
The button was small and black and still warm from her pocket.
I tipped it into my palm and the world went narrow.
It was stamped with a crown of thorns, and the horn was worn smooth along one edge.
I had those buttons made myself.
It was twenty years ago, my first winter on the throne.
I wanted every pack to send a man to my hall for the council, and I wanted each of them in a plain brown coat with my crown on it, so no wolf at the table could say he was greater than another.
Sixteen coats, sixteen envoys.
"Who has a coat with this button?" I said.
"Lester," Ellis said, behind her shoulder. His voice shook. "He wore it every winter. The top button has been missing since I was nine."
