Chapter 6: Ink

"Don't drink anything in this hall," I said. "Not the water, not the coffee, nothing."

Ellis didn't move from the doorway.

"Wynn, right? That's your name?" he said. "You're making this sound very strange."

"I know."

"You're sixteen. You've been here a day. Why would you be in our hall with Lester's jar?"

"Because he put moonroot in the cup," I said.

I held the jar out, and I held the cup out in my other hand.

"Smell it," I said. "Mom keeps a bottle of this in the clinic. A pinch makes you sleep and a spoonful makes you forget a day."

He took the cup and sniffed it and made a face.

"It's bitter," he said slowly.

"It was in the wine at my birthday party," I said. "Everyone drank from the pack cup, and everyone woke up not knowing me. I'm your sister."

He laughed, a short harsh laugh.

"I have five brothers, not a sister," he said. "I'd know."

"You have five brothers and one sister," I said. "And you used to tug my braid every morning, and you did it again yesterday."

His face went still.

"That doesn't prove anything," he said. "You could have seen me do it."

"I didn't, and I'm not done," I said.

I hadn't planned to say the next part.

It came out because it was the one thing I owned that nobody in the pack could have given me.

"You're afraid of thunder," I said quietly. "You've been afraid of it since you were nine."
