Chapter 8: The Clawfoot
His bedroom was bare.
There was a big iron bed with a plain gray blanket, a lamp, and a chair with nothing on it.
He stood in the middle of the floor in his shirtsleeves with the door open behind me.
He had not been expecting a visitor.
He had been expecting to be left alone.
"You said you'd learn me all night," I said. "It's night."
"Dovie."
"Run the bath."
There was a bathroom through a second door.
I could see white tile from where I stood, and a window full of stars.
A clawfoot tub, seven feet long, stood under the window.
He turned the taps.
I heard the water thunder in, and the steam came out through the door in a soft cloud.
I locked his bedroom door behind me.
Then I walked to him and started on his buttons, one at a time, slowly, with my eyes on his face.
He stood and let me.
His breath got shorter with every button.
"Nobody has done this," he said.
"I know," I said.
"I don't know where to put my hands," he said.
"Then put them behind your back."
He clasped his hands behind him.
I pushed the shirt off his shoulders and let it fall.
I undid his belt, and unbuttoned his trousers, and pushed them down, and he stepped out of them.
He was naked and hard and shaking in the lamplight.
The pale seam of two hands ran up his ribs.
I put my mouth on his chest first, over his heart, and then lower, and then on the seam.
He made a low, broken sound.
