Chapter 11: Eight Years

I called the lawyer at eight o'clock on Monday morning from Ingrid's porch swing.

I had not slept.

Ingrid sat beside me with her coffee.

The lawyer was an older man with a dry, careful voice, and he had clearly been waiting for me.

"Ms. Halvorsen. Your aunt has been in touch with us since August. I'm very sorry for what you've learned."

"Can he get away with it?"

"No. You are the sole beneficiary, and you don't have to wait until you are twenty-one to ask what was done with the money. You can demand a full accounting today."

"What does that mean?"

"It means your father must put in writing every dollar he took out and what it was for. He has thirty days."

"And if he can't?"

"He can't," the lawyer said. "The balance is zero. The next step is to ask him to repay it."

"All of it?"

"Every dollar that wasn't spent on you."

I looked at my hands.

There was still potting soil in the cracks of my knuckles.

"That's almost everything," I said.

"Yes."

"Please send the demand."

"I'll send it by courier today. Would you like it to go to the house, or to his office?"

I thought of the dining room, with the doll jackets on the table and the soup going cold.

I thought of the faces around it.

"Both," I said. "And Mr. Halvorsen's office should get a copy addressed to the whole staff."
