Chapter 19: The Roof
My father asked to see me alone at nine the next morning, in the den where he did the household bills.
Dylan stood at the bottom of the stairs.
He had not slept much either, and he had stayed in the hotel bed holding my hand while I stared at the ceiling.
"I'm right here," he said.
"I know."
The den smelled like old paper and cold coffee.
Dad sat behind the desk in a robe, with a large envelope in front of him and a pen laid across it.
He had shaved badly.
There was a nick under his jaw.
"Sit," he said.
"I'll stand."
He nodded.
"I had the house appraised in November," he said. "It's worth four hundred and eighty thousand. We owe a hundred and ninety on it. That leaves, with fees, about two eighty."
"You had it appraised before the trust came up."
"I knew March was coming." He didn't look at me. "I thought I might sell it quietly and tell you I'd saved it. I was going to say I'd done my best."
I waited for him to be ashamed of that.
He wasn't, quite.
"Sign here," he said, and turned the envelope toward me. "It's a deed. You take the house. It's all yours, free and clear. That's more than the number, if you count the roof. Then we're done."
I looked at the envelope.
"The roof," I said.
"It's a new roof. Twenty-year shingles."
"You want me to own the roof."
"It's the biggest thing I have."
"I know what it cost, Dad. It's on page two. Forty-one thousand dollars, paid to the roofer in one check from my grandmother's account."
