Chapter 7: Terms
I burned the note in the carriage lamp, as it said, and I had just watched the last corner curl when the carriage stopped.
There were voices outside, and one of them was calm and dry.
"Road law," Doran said. "A prisoner released today from a crown camp is under Warden protection until she reaches an address of her own choosing."
"This is the Duke's carriage," the driver said.
"Then the Duke can write to the King."
The door opened.
Doran stood in the street with six wardens behind him, and every Marchbanks guard in sight looked at his boots.

"Ask."
"Will you stand up in front of the King's inquiry in seven days and say what you saw at Greywater?"
"Seven days?"
"Orrin Moxon is being brought in from the camp under guard. The inquiry sits when he arrives. After that the Duke will send every lawyer in the river lands against us. I want you on the stand before that happens."
I looked out of the gap in the blind.
