Chapter 15: The Price of Staying

Elder Tang's pavilion had two seats, and they were not the same height.

His own chair was carved and tall.

Ji's was a three-legged stool, low enough to rest her chin on her knees.

She sat on it, because refusing to sit seemed to be the first thing he expected.

Tang poured tea for himself and set the pot out of her reach.

"I will not insult you with a speech," he said.

Then he gave one, but it was short.

The academy, he said, was prepared to treat her withdrawal as an error of judgment instead of an offense.

He slid a folded blue badge across the table with two fingers.

It was new, and the embroidery was still stiff and bright.

The old one had taken her four years to earn and him one second to tear off.

"You may wear it at the next round," Tang told her.

Ji looked at the badge for longer than she meant to.

"What does it cost?" she asked.

"Only that you remove that," Tang said, and nodded at the strip on her arm.

"Remove the school," Ji said.
