Ji's plan for the sliding stone was to hit it as hard as the academy hit things.
She dropped the rope, planted her feet in the gravel, and drew all the warmth her wrists could hold.
A single gold ring flared white at her wrist.
She slapped her palm against the stone's rough flank as it came down.
The stone responded the way a cart responds to a sparrow.
It pushed her onto her knees and kept coming.
Luo was a long way below, on loose gravel, with her walking stick sunk to the handle.
Her ankle was not the trouble.
The ground itself was moving, and every step she took slid her back toward the wall.
Ji's ring flickered and dimmed.
She had spent years imagining the dramatic blow that would save someone.
The stone did not care about gestures.
"The small place," Shen called from the base of the slope.
Ji did not have time to be offended that her master was right.
A stone slides where the ground lets it, she thought.
