Chapter 13: The Wall

Concetta was waiting in the kitchen with the lights off and a shotgun across her knees.

My mother sat beside her, gray-faced, holding a rolling pin in both hands.

"Come in, come in," Concetta said. "Close the door. Where is my grandson?"

"On the stairs. Fighting."

"Of course he is."

Another burst of shots rattled the glass of the back door, and my mother flinched against the pantry shelves.

"Mom, stay on the floor."

"Lenora, what is happening?"

"A man named Salerno wants this house."

"Is that the man who sent the glass of poison?" Concetta asked.

"Yes."

"Then he can have a bullet." She cocked the shotgun with a small, neat click. "Go."

"He told me to stay with you."

"He also told you to keep him alive." She jerked her chin at the door. "I have your mother and a rolling pin. He has a failing marrow and no sense. Go."

I ran to the clinic first and grabbed my bag from the hook.

There was one bag of platelets in the cold box, the one I had ordered through Rocco on Saturday and had hoped I would not need.

I took it, and I took the line, and I ran.

The back stairs were a stone well with a window at each landing.

Glass lay across the steps.

Alessio sat on the third landing with his back against the wall and a pistol in his lap.

His shirt was open at the collar.
