Chapter 15: Schultz's Offer

Gregory came through the kitchen door at noon with two of Rocco's men at his shoulders and his hands visible.

He had changed his coat.

He smiled at the long table, the copper pots and the old woman at the stove.

"Concetta Carbone," he said. "It's an honor."

"Sit there." Concetta pointed her wooden spoon at the far chair. "Don't touch the bread."

Alessio stood at the end of the room with his back to the pantry door and his arms folded.

He had insisted on coming down.

I had insisted on the chair beside him, and I had won.

Rocco leaned in the doorway, and my mother, at my request, sat upstairs.

"One hour under my roof," Alessio said. "That was the offer. Say what you came for."

"I came for her." Gregory sat and looked straight at me. "Len. You look tired."

"Don't call me that."

"I've missed you. I didn't know how much until I stood outside this house last night."

He spread his hands, gentle.

"I'll be brief. I know you made the L-1 compound. I know you're the only person alive who understands it. If the audit board finds it in Mr. Carbone's blood, it has your handwriting on it."

"It has yours," I said. "You stole it."

"Can you prove that?" He sounded sorry for me. "The server is mine. The patents are mine. Every notebook with a date on it says I led the work. Your steel case has a vial and a few pages, and you've got a record that says you came undone once."

Alessio did not move.

I could feel him not moving, an inch from my elbow.
