Chapter 15: The Line in the Gravel
I did not feel the wrench leave my pocket.
It was in my fist, and my feet were on the line, and Marguerite Thibodeaux was looking at my son's window with a smile on her face.
Then Remy walked past me.
He crossed my gravel to the parts-wash drum by the bay door.
He took hold of the black pack flag with both hands, where it hung soaking over the rim, and hauled it out with the solvent running off it in brown ropes.
It was heavy and dripping and it stank.
He did not wipe it.
He carried it back to the line of oyster shell and stopped in front of his mother with the whole pack watching.
"Hold out your hands," he said.
"Remy," Marguerite said.
"Hold out your hands, Mama."
She looked at him, and I saw her decide.
She lifted both hands, palms up, with the rosary hanging from one, and he laid the wet flag across them.
The solvent soaked into her black coat.
She did not move.
"That's the Bayou Bœuf flag," Remy said.
"It's been on the Alpha's truck since my grandfather's day.
"I was given it three years ago when Papa died.
"I'm giving it back."
The lane went so quiet I could hear the cane moving.
"I'm not the Alpha," Remy said.
"Not on a Tithe.
"Not on a girl's wolf in a bottle.
"You can have the seat and the pack house and the council.
"I won't hold a thing that was built on that."
"You don't understand what you're doing," his mother said, very low.
