Chapter 16: The House
Remy had his jeans closed and his torn shirt held together with a shop clip before I unlocked the door.
I counted that as a point in his favor.
Bastien stood on the gravel in his pajama pants and a rain jacket, with Poteau leaning on his shin, and looked up at the pair of us with great interest.
"Why's the door locked?" he said.
"Because we were talking about grown-up things," I said.
"What things?"
"Boring ones."
"Is he staying?" Bastien asked.
"Bastien."
"I'm only asking," my son said.
"Nobody tells me anything.
"There were a hundred wolves on the lane this morning, I saw them from the neighbor's window."
"There were forty," Remy said.
Bastien looked at him with approval.
"You don't round up," he said.
"That's good.
"Mama rounds up when she's mad."
I closed my eyes.
I had stood at the door of my own shed in the middle of a war with oak splinters in my hair, and my son had watched from a stranger's window.
I opened them.
"Come on," I said.
"All of you.
"Pancakes."
It was the first time Remy had been in my kitchen.
He stood in the doorway with his hands in his pockets, and the room, which had always seemed big to me, got small.
It is a yellow kitchen with a tiled counter and a table by the window that looks onto the bayou.
Bastien's drawings are on the fridge, mostly of engines, and there is a calendar from the boudin shop.
